Shalamov’s birthday and the second life of “The Fourth Vologda”, his autobiographical essay
8 july 2009
Shalamov called the political victims of the tsarist regime exiled to Vologda “the third Vologda”, after the historical Vologda and the traditional one (town of the lace manufacture etc.). That is why the historians’ meeting at the Museum of the Political Exile was very important. Valery Yesipov, the head of the museum, noted that without “the third Vologda” the fourth one, which is Shalamov’s personal Vologda, would have been impossible. This thesis became the veritable refrain of the meeting.
